AdIn Research Incorporated
Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, “Marubeni”) and AdIn Research, Inc. (hereinafter, “AdIn”), an ICT software research, development, and application company, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”) for a business alliance to jointly implement J-Credit creation and sales support based on the establishment of a new system. This system calculates the amount of forest-based J-Credits using measurement data from the Optical Woods Ledger (“OWL”), a 3D forest measurement system developed by AdIn.
The J-Credit Scheme, which was created to circulate funds for mitigating global climate change through the free trading of government certified credits, involves the awarding of credits (J-Credits) equivalent to the amounts of carbon dioxide and other emissions reductions achieved through the introduction of energy-saving equipment and the use of renewable energy. It also awards credits for the amounts of carbon dioxide and other relevant substances absorbed through appropriate forest management. However, due to the complicated and time-consuming procedures required to register with the forest-based J-Credit Scheme, the number of forest-based J-Credits certified is currently low.
OWL, developed by AdIn, is a system that performs laser scanning of forests to easily visualize and create a database of forest resource information such as the location and volume of trees. Approximately 170 units have already been delivered to the Forestry Agency, local governments, forestry cooperatives, and private entities, and the system is also used as a monitoring tool when registering forest-based J-Credits.
Marubeni is promoting the registration and certification of J-Credits in Noshiro City, Akita Prefecture, and throughout Japan in order to solve the problems faced by Japan’s forest industry, such as dispersed small forest lands, unclear forest boundaries, lack of reforestation after logging, and failure to return profits to forest owners. Through this business alliance, Marubeni and AdIn will build a system to automatically calculate future carbon dioxide absorption based on the amount of forest resources measured using the OWL system and support registration and certification of forest-based J-Credits using this system. Through these activities, Marubeni and AdIn will promote the registration and certification of forest-based J-Credits nationwide for the forests’ expected generation of an estimated 10 million tons of CO2 per year, thereby contributing to the realization of a decarbonized society by adding environmental value to forests.
Marubeni’s efforts in this area align with its long-term vision for climate change (formulated in March 2021) and its Green Strategy, one of the basic policies to enhance corporate value in the company’s Mid-Term Management Strategy “GC2024.” Marubeni aims to enhance the environmental and economic value of forest resources in Japan and abroad as well as to open the way to a sustainable future through the power of people and forests.
AdIn promotes the utilization of valuable forest resource data along with the spread of the OWL system to realize highly accurate and efficient measurement of forest resources. The company also aims to create new value for forests through data analysis including AI as an IT company.
