Minera Centinela, which is owned 30% by Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, “Marubeni”) and 70% by Antofagasta plc (hereinafter, “Antofagasta”), one of the world’s leading copper producers, has announced that it has been awarded the Copper Mark(*1) on July 22, 2021.

The Copper Mark, founded by the International Copper Association (”ICA”)(*2), is a comprehensive, credible assurance framework that demonstrates the copper industry’s responsible production practices and industry contribution to the United Nations SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

Marubeni will focus on the continuous improvement of responsible copper production in its copper businesses and aim to strengthen the company’s commitment to the SDGs. In addition to Minera Centinela, Minera Antucoya (owned 30% by Marubeni) and Minera Los Pelambres (owned 9.21% by Marubeni) have also decided that all of their mining operations will convert to renewable energy, and will also strive to receive the Copper Mark.

(*1) Copper Mark
The Copper Mark was founded by the ICA, and the Copper Mark company was established as an independent entity in 2019. In order to be identified as a contributor to SDG 12 and receive the Copper Mark, copper producers will be assessed against a set of 32 responsible production criteria.

The ICA leads the world’s copper industry on the issues critical to securing copper’s future growth and achieving the SDGs. ICA’s 36 members represent a majority of the world’s primary copper production, some of the largest mid-stream smelter/refiners, and 10 of the world’s largest copper fabricators (Headquartered in Washington, D.C.).
