Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, “Marubeni”), through Aguas Horizonte SpA (hereinafter, “AH”), a special purpose company in which Marubeni invested jointly with Transelec Holdings Rentas Limitada (hereinafter, “Transelec”), is implementing a desalination and water transmission project (hereinafter, “the Project”) for Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (hereinafter, “CODELCO”). On October 5, 2023, the Project won the award for “Loan of the Year” at the “2023 Project & Infrastructure Finance Awards” held by LatinFinance, an internationally known business magazine for project finance.

This award is given yearly to the project that has made the largest contribution to economic development in the regions of Latin America and the Caribbean and it is selected and commended based on its loan transactions. This year, the Project was favorably evaluated for having the largest financing amount and structure among similar financing projects in these two regions.

In addition, on October 19, 2023, Marubeni, Transelec, and AH held a ceremony to celebrate the conclusion of a Loan Agreement and Finance Close in New York City, United States, inviting parties involved to arrange this finance, including banks, advisors, and CODELCO.

 

 

This is the first large-scale shared water infrastructure project in Chile to efficiently transport desalinated water to multiple large-scale copper mines. Its desalinated capacity is approximately 70,000 cubic meters per day, with plans to expand to approximately 170,000 cubic meters per day in the future.

Marubeni positioned green strategy as one of the basic policies to enhance corporate value in its mid-term management strategy “GC2024.” By participating in this undertaking, Marubeni will utilize its knowledge of water businesses to contribute to the stable supply of copper, which is indispensable for the realization of a sustainable society.
