2022
Commencement of a Feasibility Study for a
P2G System by Utilizing Green Hydrogen in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom

Marubeni Corporation
Marubeni, together with Toray Industries, Inc. (hereinafter, “Toray”), Yamanashi Hydrogen Company, Inc. (hereinafter, “YHC”), and Siemens Energy K.K. (hereinafter, “Siemens Energy”) will start a “Demonstration project for P2G systems*¹ to decarbonise urban areas in cold regions where renewable energy is increasing (Glasgow, Scotland)”. These companies jointly proposed this project to the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in the second public solicitation for the FY2022 “International Demonstration Project for Japanese Technologies Contributing to Efficient Energy Consumption”, and the project was selected for implementation on October 27, 2022.
In this project, these companies will investigate the feasibility of producing green hydrogen in Scotland, where Marubeni is developing its business through a Memorandum of Understanding (hereinafter, “MOU”)*2 signed with Scottish Enterprise. As Scotland has an abundance of surplus renewable energy, which can be used for the project, Marubeni is using such renewable energy and the Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer manufactured by Siemens Energy fitted with Toray’s proprietary hydrocarbon electrolyte membranes and the Power-to-Gas (P2G) system, in which YHC has technological expertise, to conduct the project. The companies will conduct a survey on how to install and operate a new energy supply and demand system that meets cold urban heat demand with green hydrogen, and how to utilize green hydrogen in heating equipment for large-scale facilities and industrial boilers.
Through this project, the companies aim to contribute to the decarbonisation of Scotland and the rest of the UK, examine ways to incorporate the knowledge of advanced renewable energy markets in Europe into Japan, and contribute to creating a value chain, including the production and utilization of green hydrogen in Japan and the UK and the realization of a hydrogen society.
*1 P2G(Power-to-gas) system: A system that uses electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar power to produce hydrogen from an electrolyzer.
*2 On November 10, 2021, Marubeni signed an MOU with Scottish Enterprise on comprehensive collaboration for the decarbonisation of Scotland including floating offshore wind and green hydrogen businesses in Scotland.
