Marubeni Corporation

Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, “Marubeni”) is pleased to announce that the installation work has been completed, and operation and monitoring services for Mae Moh Thermal Power Plant Unit 11 and 13 owned by Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand commenced in March 2021.

This demonstration project has been conducted by Marubeni through a strategic project formulation study and a pre-demonstration study under the "Private Sector-Led Low-Carbon Technology Promotion Project", which has been implemented by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) since 2018.

This demonstration project aims to improve power generation efficiency and reliability through AI and big data analysis developed by Marubeni and other solution providers based on real-time power plant operational data. The effectiveness of these solutions will be evaluated over a two-year operation and monitoring service period. In addition, this project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in both Japan and Thailand by utilizing the Joint Credit Mechanism*.

Marubeni will continue to contribute to the digital transformation and greenhouse gas reduction of power plants by leveraging the IoT solutions demonstrated in this project.

* Joint Credit Mechanism: The JCM is a system to cooperate with developing countries for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in which the result of a reduction is assessed as a contribution by both partner countries and Japan.

Outline of the Demonstration Project

Demonstration period January 2020 to the end of February 2023
■ Installation and Implementation: January 2020 - February 2021
■ Operation and Monitoring: March 2021 - February 2023
Contractor NEDO
Project operator Marubeni
Demonstration site Mae Moh Thermal Power Plant Unit 11 and 13 (300 MW each), Thailand
Details The following 3 solutions are implemented and their effectiveness will be verified.
■ Thermal Efficiency Optimization Solution: Provide technical guidance necessary to improve the performance of equipment by analyzing the efficiency and degree of degradation, in order to improve the efficiency of the entire power plant.
■ Boiler Combustion Optimization Solution: AI algorithms is used to improve boiler combustion and operation (including optimization of soot blower operation).
■ Anomaly Detection Solution: AI algorithms analyze big data on the operating status of power plant equipment to detect and analyze abnormalities before a failure or accident occurs.
