Receipt of Notification of Award for Seabed Leasing Rights for Development of a Floating Offshore Wind Farm in Scotland

Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, “Marubeni”), together with Scottish renewable energy developer SSE Renewables Limited and Danish fund management company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners P/S (hereinafter, “Consortium”), jointly submitted a bid for seabed leasing for a project in the ScotWind process. The proposed development of offshore wind in the Scottish waters under the jurisdiction of the Crown Estate Scotland and received notification of successfully being awarded a seabed rights on 17th January 2022 (hereinafter, “Project”).

The Project will be one of the world’s first and largest floating offshore wind farms of this type with a total capacity of 2,600MW located off the Scottish eastern coast.

The Scottish Government has committed to Scotland achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045, underpinned by statutory legislation to reduce emissions by 75% by 2030 and the Project aims to contribute to this decarbonisation in Scotland. Furthermore, through the Project, the Consortium envisages delivering substantial economic and social benefits worth billions of pounds for Scotland. This includes the creation of a multi-million-pound supply chain fund to directly invest in Scottish companies for further development and support for a green recovery from COVID-19.

Marubeni owns stakes in power projects across 21 countries (including Japan) for a total net capacity of about 12GW. In terms of floating offshore wind projects, Marubeni was one of the first developers participated in demonstration projects including Fukushima Floating Offshore Wind Farm Demonstration Project. Also, as part of the company’s activities for enhancing sustainability, Marubeni issued the Notification Regarding Business Policies Pertaining to Sustainability in Relation to Coal-Fired Power Generation Business and Renewable Energy Generation Business in September 2018, and set the Marubeni Long-Term Vision on Climate Change in March 2021 for the purpose of contributing to solving global climate change. Based on this experience in acting as a lead developer of these kinds of projects, Marubeni strives to contribute to achieving Net Zero in Scotland through the project and keep expanding floating offshore wind projects globally.
