The Marubeni Foundation was established as a private foundation in 1974 with a donation from Marubeni. The Foundation provides 100 million yen in grants each year and up until 2023 has awarded a total of 2,896 grants amounting to 4.95 billion yen.
The Marubeni Foundation provides grants to a wide range of recipients, including facilities and organizations for disabled people, children and the elderly. Reflecting the current social situation, the Foundation gives special consideration to projects that are considered difficult for the government to reach, such as support for people who have withdrawn from society, support for the needy, children's (community) cafeterias, food banks, protection of women, and local community activities.
The 100 million yen in grants is made up of investment income from Marubeni's donation, individual donations through the "100 Yen Club" (see below) and matching gifts from Marubeni, Marubeni Gallery admission fees, and donations from special menu items at the company cafeteria, so the Foundation is supported by both the company and by individuals.

Marubeni's Unique Initiatives

“100 Yen Club”
The “100 Yen Club”, which began in 1995, is a voluntary program for donations to the Marubeni Foundation from current and former executives and employees of Marubeni and the Marubeni Group. Participants can donate an amount of their choice, starting at 100 yen a month, and Marubeni will match the donation with a matching gift of the same amount.

Taking account of the diverse needs in the social welfare sector, in 2017 Marubeni began seconding employees and former employees to some past recipients of Marubeni Foundation grants, in order to provide practical support.
Utilizing the experience and knowledge they have cultivated through business activities, approximately 20 employees are providing assistance to grant beneficiaries such as administrative work and on-site support.

To provide support for youth education and development in emerging countries, Marubeni has established scholarship fund programs in six countries, mainly in the ASEAN region and Brazil, starting with the Philippines in 1989.
Taking into account the educational situation in each country, and in response to local requests, every year scholarships are offered to students from elementary school to university level, as well as additional support such as donations of PCs and stationery supplies.

Scope：Marubeni Scholarships in the Philippines

Marubeni’s subsidiary company Maynilad Water Services, Inc. ("Maynilad"), a water and wastewater company in the Philippines, is actively contributing to the development of local communities through community investment.
In FY2021 Maynilad donated a total of approximately 134 million pesos to several initiatives aimed at making a positive impact on human rights issues in local communities, such as providing employment opportunities for inhabitants of neighboring communities, infrastructure to supply drinking water for people living in poor areas, food and water for typhoon victims, and white coats for medical workers in order to improve public health.
We will continue to contribute proactively to society and the environment in the Philippines.

Marubeni has welcomed students from France’s Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA) and its successor, the National Institute of Public Service (INSP), which provides training for high level civil servants, almost every year since 1981. To date more than 80 trainees have participated in Marubeni’s study program.
Also, in 2012 Marubeni made a donation to Qatar University, the alma mater of members of the Qatar royal family and several government ministers, and since then various cultural and educational projects have been implemented with these funds.
Marubeni received 3 trainees from INSP and 2 from Qatar University in 2023. Through study programs including an introduction to the functions of the sogo shosha and the activities of the Marubeni Group, business site visits, and opportunities to experience Japanese culture, we are contributing to the development of human resources who will play a leading role in the futures of France and Qatar, as well as to the further strengthening of the close relations with both countries.

Marubeni hosts company visits by junior high and high school students, with a program introducing the sogo shosha business model and our company's approach to the serious issues that are affecting the global environment and society, an office tour and so on. In FY2023 Marubeni hosted 17 visits by students from junior high schools and high schools across Japan.

Since 1996, Marubeni has hosted the "Business Training for Japanese School Teachers" sponsored by the Japan Institute for Social and Economic Affairs. In August 2023, a total of 20 teachers from Adachi and Shinagawa wards in Tokyo participated in the program, which included lectures on the Marubeni Group's business, sustainability concepts, and human resource development, as well as visits to Marubeni Group companies. By enabling teachers to deepen their understanding of corporate activities and the business of sogo shosha, and use their experiences and insights in education and the improvement of educational settings, we will contribute to the realization of a harmonious society.
